A man with a metal detector unearthed 840 gold coins minted during the Iron Age. The coins, valued at over one million dollars are now on display at the British Museum in London. Because the coins were over 300 years old, they have been declared "treasure" by the Suffolk Coroner which makes them property of the Crown. Arrrgh!

Buried Treasure - Bulgaria
If you've been searching for a reason to visit Bulgaria, I've got one: Buried Treasure. According to recent reports the treasure of King Ivan Shishman was discovered buried beneath the remains of an ancient church. The King ruled Bulgaria from 1371 until 1393, however, he was an unwilling vassal (i.e. puppet) for the Ottoman Empire almost the entire time, ruling the Ottoman Balkans (which at that time included Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, and the former Yugoslavia. Shishman was beheaded by the Ottomans once he was no longer useful to them. Had Shishman lived, he would have witnessed the utter defeat of the Ottomans throughout the Balkans at the hands of Timur (Tamerlane) in 1402. The treasure consists of over 100 silver coins having a value of appoximately $15,000. Arrrgh.

Buried (Champagne) Treasure?!
Off the coast of Normandy lies the island village of Mont Saint Michel. Long known for its architectural and historic beauty, the monastery has drawn the attention of the Champagne Pirate for its unusual buried treasure. Champagne Louis Roederer has sent scuba divers to bury a few cases of Brut Premier on the seabed of Saint-Malo bay at a depth of 15 meters. The purpose of this action is to test whether bottle aging in gently rolling sea water compares favorably to champagne's chalk caves. Believe it or not, Roederer is not the first winery to bottle age under the Channel off Saint-Malo, but the first time for champagne. To protect this treasure from pirates, Roederer has hid them. Hopefully they made a treasure map! Arrrgh.

Buried Treasure
A machinery sales manager was digging in a field in England when he hit a treasure trove of gold! Specifically, ancient roman gold coins bearing the likeness of the Rebel Emperor Carausius. Carausius was a Roman naval commander stationed in Britain. When Rome tried to fire him, he declared himself Emperor of Britain and Northern Gaul. Eventually the Romans re-took his Gallic Territories and ultimately Carausius was assassinated by his finance minister during the reconquest of Britain. During his brief reign, Carausius minted coins of gold and silver, only 23 of which were known to exist until today.

Burried Treasure
Avast! The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the police were recently handed a treasure map by a lawyer. The lawyer received the map from his client in what appears to be a bid for leniency. The treasure, valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, was buried beside the 118 Freeway at White Oak Avenue and consisted mainly of jewelery. The pirate in question, is facing 8-10 years in prison for a string of burglaries . We'll see if spilling your guts is an effective tactic for him, or not. If I were the lawyer, I'd have visited the trove before turning over the map...
